The British public want a controlled and contributory based immigration system

Commenting on Jeremy Corbyn's remarks on immigration at Labour Conference, Ryan Shorthouse, Director of Bright Blue, said:

"It is right that the overwhelming majority of immigrants make a positive contribution to the UK, but Corbyn is wrong to say we should not control the numbers coming into the UK.

"In some parts of the UK, immigration leads to excessive demand in local labour markets and on local services, causing poorer outcomes - such as lower pay levels - for people living there. It is simply not possible, politically or practically, to always resolve pressures on services such as housing and schools at the scale and size that is necessary to meet demands from immigration. That is why there must be some form of control on numbers.

"Thanks to Brexit and the appointment of a new Cabinet there is an exciting opportunity for the Government to introduce significant reforms to our immigration system to increase public confidence in it, and build the controlled and contributory-based immigration system they want."
